Essay on Punctuality

Have you ever noticed that some people show up EXACTLY on time, like the cavalry, and others are habitually late?  Be it in business or your private life, the way you conduct yourself concerning other people's time is often tantamount to your success.  Here is an article by John W. Wheat describing what it means to be punctual. Punctuality is the characteristic of being able to complete a required task or fulfill an obligation before or at a previously designated time. "Punctual" is often used synonymously with "on time." According to each culture, there is often an understanding about what is considered an acceptable degree of punctuality. Usually, a small amount of lateness is acceptable; this is commonly about ten or fifteen minutes in Western cultures. In some cultures, such as Japanese society, or in the military there basically is no allowance. Some cultures have an unspoken understanding that actual deadlines are different from stated deadl...

To Being Old: An Old Person

I never really liked the terminology "Old Person" but this makes me feel better about it. And if you ain't one, I bet ya you know one! I got this from an "Old Personal friend of mine"! ------------ • Old People are easy to spot at sporting events; during the playing of the National Anthem. Old People remove their caps and stand at attention and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them. • Old People remember World War II, Pearl Harbor , Guadalcanal ,Normandy and Hitler. They remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, The Cold War, the Jet Age and the Moon Landing. They remember the 50 plus Peacekeeping Missions from 1945 to 2005, not to mention Vietnam. • If you bump into an Old People on the sidewalk he will apologize. If you pass an Old Person on the street, he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old People trust strangers and are courtly to women. • Old People hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the...

Lie Lowest - Credit

Someone just contacted me about a quotation I posted some time ago about humility and paying homage, and they asked me about the citation. OK, the quotation is actually mine, and it is derived from Lao Tzu ’s Tao Te Ching Chapter 66 : "That whereby the rivers and seas are able to receive the homage and tribute of all the valley streams, is their skill in being lower than they;--it is thus that they are the kings of them all. So it is that the sage (ruler), wishing to be above men, puts himself by his words below them, and, wishing to be before them, places his person behind them." Here is my paraphrasing: “All rivers pay homage to the ocean for it lies lowest.” --Jeffrey Fry Some have accused me of stealing from the great master, and I thought I had not. He is talking about leadership, I am talking about humility (though both are intertwined). I had been saying my river quotation for over 30 years, and could not remember where I first learned it! I has to be when I was i...

As I Began

By Charlie Chaplin As I began to love myself I found that anguish and emotional suffering are only warning signs that I was living against my own truth. Today, I know, this is " AUTHENTICITY ." As I began to love myself I understood how much it can offend somebody as I try to force my desires on this person, even though I knew the time was not right and the person was not ready for it, and even though this person was me. Today I call it " RESPECT ." As I began to love myself I stopped craving for a different life, and I could see that everything that surrounded me was inviting me to grow. Today I call it " MATURITY ." As I began to love myself I understood that at any circumstance, I am in the right place at the right time, and everything happens at the exactly right moment. So I could be calm. Today I call it " SELF-CONFIDENCE ." As I began to love myself I quit steeling my own time, and I stopped designing huge project...

The Most List

Yes, a new year and new decade is fast approaching, but I would like to point out a few things about this New Year’s Eve that are pretty unique. First, tonight we will experience a Blue Moon. For those who do not know, it is when a full moon occurs within the same month, and it is very rare to have it on New Year’s Eve (next one is in 19 years). Secondly, instead of looking back at the year, some time ago I made a list of the MOST. These are kind of universal in their application, and thought it would make a nice addition as I wish you a very Happy New Year. THE MOST LIST The most destructive habit: Worry The greatest joy: Giving The kindest word: Thanks The greatest loss: Loss of Self-respect The most satisfying work: Helping Others The ugliest personality trait: Selfishness The most endangered species: Dedicated Leaders Our greatest natural resource: Our Youth The greatest "shot in the arm": Encouragement The most effective sleeping pill: Peace of Mind The most c...
