Guns, Violence, and Statistics

Many people jump up and down whenever the topic of guns, gun violence, or gun control is brought up. Personally, I have to believe that our Founding Father’s believe that a well armed population is the best counter balance to a corrupt government. For as Thomas Jefferson once stated, “When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.” In actuality, when people think of the causes of the American War for Independence, they think of slogans like “no taxation without representation” or a cause célèbre like the Boston Tea Party. In reality, what finally forced the colonials into a shooting war with the British Army in April 1775 was not taxes or even warrant-less searches of homes and their occupation by soldiers, but one of many attempts by the British to disarm Americans as part of an overall gun control program, which included seizure of firearms and powered. So, for this very reason it is understandable why the Founding...

Life is a Train Ride (Perspective)

We often ponder why we are here and what is our purpose.  What is it for and why certain people come and leave or lives while others become what I consider hold dear and I call “friend.” I think this story might help with how to see life as a train ride.  Life is like a journey on a train...with its stations...changes of routes...and accidents! At birth we boarded the train and met our parents, and we believe they will always travel by our side. However, at some station our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on this journey alone….but not quite. As time goes by, other people will board the train; and they will be significant i.e. our siblings, friends, children, and even the love of our life. Many will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Some will move to a another car for awhile and come back. Others will go so unnoticed we don't realize they left their seats! This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hurts, hellos, goodbyes...

Death to the Republic?

In 1887 Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinborough, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years prior: "A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse over loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship." "The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From li...

Heaven Can Wait

We all are going to face our mortality, but sometimes having a good perspective helps. Hope you enjoy this Fryday Humor post? ______________________________________________ The couple were 85 years old and had been married for 60 years. Though they were far from rich, they managed to get by because they watched their pennies. Though not young, they were both in very good health, largely due to the wife's insistence on healthy foods and exercise for the last decade. One day, their good health didn't help when they went on a rare vacation and their plane crashed, sending them off to Heaven. They reached the pearly gates, and St. Peter escorted them inside. He took them to a beautiful mansion, furnished in gold and fine silks, with a fully stocked kitchen and a waterfall in the master bath. A maid could be seen hanging their favorite clothes in the closet. They gasped in astonishment when he said, 'Welcome to Heaven. This will be your home now.' The ol...

On A Ledge

I wrote this poem for a friend some time ago, and just wanted to post it here to tell everyone that we have ALL faced a time in our life when someone has hurt us terribly and we found ourselves "out on this ledge!" The great thing about it is that we all stepped away. Yes, it still may hurt, and the feelings and scars may never go away, but the choice is ours. Happily, I will never feel this way again, as it reflects a selfish kind of love. Sorry if it is a little dark. I sit on this ledge I look all around I move to the edge I stare at the ground Alone with myself I sit and I wait Alone on this shelf To balance my fate The birds up above They fly on the wing They soar like a dove Together they sing You once felt so strong A love that was true But now it’s all gone So what should I do Except questioning why I am up here at all These feelings won’t die And now I will fall To a fate that I choose To destiny’s end Nothing to loose And I can’t pretend That It doesn’t feel ...
